Anyone doing any good to help the environment?
Just wondering, because I just read on Yahoo! News that more cities are commited to bicycling rather than driving everywhere.
I also just want to know some better ways to help the environment than recycling and that junk…lol

I help the environment nearly as much as an environmentalist. Of course that amount is 0.

no none of my cars get good gas mileage….well maybe my prix but the rest are mustangs and the highest one is 18mpg and thats on highway.

Some of the best ways to help the environment is to save energy personally – we don’t act like it sometimes, but energy is not an unlimited resource.

In addition to the top ten tips listed there – if you have a dishwasher, run the dishes only when full and only at night….
it won’t steam up you or your house during the day, saving on electricity costs (you won’t need to run the AC to get rid of the excess heat during the day).

Sure.
1. Drink water out of same bottle. Just keep refilling.
2. If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If its brown, flush it down.
3. When showering, most people turn on water and wait till it warms. Instead, this is a good time to do some dishes in the shower. Or, a good time to go #1. It’s all going down the drain anyways, might as well use the water.
4. Pick up trash. Since others seem to have a problem doing it.
5. Hypermile in the Car – Shift into neutral and coast when possible. Saves on gas $$. Sort of fun seeing how far you can coast. BUT, never let your coasting interfere with others driving. It is really quite rude if you are coasting along and people are stacked up behind you.
6. After drying hands at work, keep the damp towels (my work has individual paper towels in restroom) and use as napkins throughout the day. Might as well get more use out of them.
7. When hot, close blinds on south side of house to reduce warming.
8. ALWAYS close the door when a/c running. I hate paying utility bills. I finally had to start charging my kids $1 every time they left the door open. Needless to say, they close it right away now. I am always amazed that my friends do not care about the money flying out their open doors.
9. Bought water tank and use it to water all plants.
10. Had to replace wife’s clothes washer. Did the math and a low water washer will repay itself in 4 years. It annoys me that I had to pay $200 more for this washer compared to a regular washer. I asked the accountant about any credit for this years’ taxes. The company gets a tax break, but not me. What a bunch of crap. Those are our politicians at work.
11. Try to reduce my wife’s laundry and my water bill by re-wearing clothes. BUT please, if the clothes smell funny, wash them immediately.
12. Only get plastic bag from store when I need it. But, I never feel guilty about using plastic. I love plastic compared to paper. I do reuse the bags for trash liners and taking my lunch to work.
13. My wife also reuses sandwich bags. Personally, the money savings is not worth my time.
14. The normal stuff. Turn off lights, etc. I do not buy the new light bulbs as there is no cost benefit to paying extra for them.
I do these things for my savings. It saves me money. I do not do it because of global warming (as it is a lie). We must all be good stewards of the environment. But, trying to change the climate, that is just moronic. If you really want to make a difference, do the things which will save you money. Then, with all the money you save, send me the check.

Hey,
Just the other day I was fortunate enough to have dinner with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. before listening to him speak at a sustainability conference. He is one the most amazing people you will ever meet in terms of environmental awareness advocacy. One of the things I learned is that, if we covered just 19% of the desert in the Southwestern United States with solar panels, it would supply the entire country with power, even if every person in the country owned an electric car, and completely rid our dependance on oil. Also, because of what the Bush Administration has done, 60,000 people die every year from asthma attacks, up from 4,000 before he came into office. The reason is this that there are approximately 400 power plants in the US that are illegally burning coal as a power source without installing ozone scrubbers in their stacks which would cost less than 1% of one year’s revenue. When Clinton was in office he was in the process of criminally prosecuting 52 of these companies and investigating another 300. When Bush was running for President he accepted $156 billion in campaign support from this illegal industry and one of the first things he did once in office was order all criminal charges against these companies dropped and cancelled the investigations into the other ones.
As far what you can do yourself, if you have the money you can install photovoltaic cells on the roof of your house to supply your house with energy and any surplus energy you don’t use you can sell back to the power company. If you don’t have the money to do that, you can actually pay a premium to the power company to make sure that all the power you receive comes from renewable sources such as solar or wind power. Hybrid cars are also a great option.

I do most of what CrazyConservative said, except that I buy the new light bulbs because I like light bulbs that I don’t have to change for years, compared to the old ones that always need replacements.

Driving only when necessary helps. My car gets decent mpg and I’m glad it does cause gas prices are insane. I changed all my light bulbs to compact fluorescent and actually have noticed about a $5-10 a month difference in utility bills. I recycle. I got some of those re-usable grocery bags that walmart has but I keep forgetting to use them so I have this giant trash bag full of plastic grocery bags. If nothing else they’ll be good for packing boxes or something one day.
Also the road my neighborhood is on sits along a bunch of wetlands and the intra coastal waterway. I have walked along that road and picked up trash a couple times.

Planting trees to create a coabon sink. Maybe people in towns can’t plant trees around their home, but you can find places where they do. The overcutting of forests on a global scale contibutes to climate change.
Even sponsoring trees in another country helps the environment.
Loby your government to encourage consevation in the Amazon and Congo.

It is WE who need the help! the environment is more empowered and able to take care of itself than we are being indoctrinated to perceive. We will /can only go so far, environment will win at as its attuned with the cosmic life forces that sustains it.
It is us human beings who need the help and to make shifts in our lives
However, its highly fashionable to run around saving the planet whilst living the same lives as we have been.
Its not about some emotional frenzy around a few carrier bags! It about us making profound inner shifts of discernment and lifestyle choices. If we look after ourselves with conscious awareness, the environment will do just fine.

You could stop breathing, stop farting.. oh, you want a real answer? Ok. Follow Oregon’s example, since we were the first to have a bottle bill, so instead of chucking your coke empties in the trash, you put them in a bag and get 5 cents back for each one. I think the whole nation should do that, it works fine here. Only a few states do it. I’m all for that cause it makes a real difference you can see here. But it won’t help the polar ice one damn bit. Nothing you or I do will help the north pole. For you see, the Earth warms and cools all on its own, just as it has for hundreds of millions of years. Humans have nothing to do with it.

There are lots of ways of recycleing. Do you have a milk man and return bottles. Go to jumbles and car boots. I co-ordinate atoy appeal for used toys. Charity shops, (although I think they charge too much. I never thought I would get into recycleing but I am really getting into it

I started thinking about recycling when I moved to manalapan. I am just getting it. So, Yes I re-use my shopping bags, I go to Aldi’s and I absolutey refuse to use my dryer. I hang all the clothes, I found using softner helps majorly, but now I’m looking for alternative softners that are better for the environment. I’m actively looking into other things too. Any ideas that are feasable can be thrown my way. Thanks

A friend gave me a book called Gorgeously Green by Sophie
Uliano. She had really good ideas how to slowly adjust to being
more green, not in an ugly hemp shift, with unshaved underarms and trangly, matted hair, but in a normal manner. She makes it really fun and interesting and it is hard to not think about these things once you read about them. Pick up the book if you want to learn ways to go green in a fun, responsible way.
