In my experience, lovebirds need a lot more one-on-one attention, handling, and socialization than many other birds. Almost all of the lovebirds I’ve ever had have been very mean, no matter how hard I try to handle or socialize them. However, I do think starting with one budgie (parakeet, whatever you want to call it) would be best. They’re simple to take care of, and make far less of a mess than a lovebird. Your son can start off slow with birds and if he can manage a parakeet, my next step up would be a cockatiel. They’re a bit bigger and can need slightly more handling, but are also good for beginners.

Ok here’s my advice I give anyone wanting to buy a bird…
If there is almost always someone home, then I would only get one bird because it will bond to you, and won’t need a companion, but if you aren’t (like if you are at school and work a lot) then I would get two. They need a friend to talk to while they wait for you to come home.
I don’t usually reccomend the really small breeds (budgies, finches, canaries, lovebirds, etc.), because I find them a bit too antisocial and jumpy (this is definitely not always the case), plus first time owners generally get a bit bored with them and they end up being unsocial and kept in a cage for the rest of their lives (also not always true, of course).
When you are looking for a bird, it is a good idea to get a hand reared one. This means that the bird has already bonded to humans and shouldn’t be afraid of you. Now, since you have never had a bird before (i’m assuming), I would suggest a Cockateil. Cockatiels are very loving and are great pets to have. They can cost anywhere from $50 to $150, and they are pretty easy to look after.
If you would rather a more interactive bird, i would also suggest a conure. These parrots aren’t very large and are very affectionate, while still easy to look after. They can range from $200 to $1,000 or more, depending which breed you get. I have a Green Cheek Conure, and he is wonderful. He is not much bigger than a Cockateil and talks and gives kisses. I have experience with both breeds and have found that green cheeks seem to be friendlier, but that definitely depends on the circumstances.
Of course there are a whole lot of other birds that you can choose from, but those are the two i would recommend. However, if you don’t have much $$$ to spend (and this goes for anyone wanting a bird), go for a budgie, they are gorgeous and no, they are not hard to train if you are persistent, but don’t just get them because they are cheap. Of course budgies and lovebirds can be very good pets, but in my experience, they don’t usually seem to ke as keen on people as the bigger breeds.
Here is a good site for basic bird care if you need it

Just remember, you should get it out of the cage for AT LEAST 10 minutes every day if it is in a small cage otherwise it just isn’t fair on the bird (this is a different story if it is in an aviary). Many people leave their birds in small cages all day and all night and its really sad…
I hope your son is happy with the choice you make and I hope this helped

Love birds. They can get atached and love your son SO much. they cuddle and follow. They will also give him a frend to talk to when he is sad. Fancey parakeets most of the time just sit and look preety.

I think a parakeet would be a good first pet. they do need a lot of responsibility. they need to be socialized and tamed.
