Good digital SLR camera (not too expensive) for school project?
Next year I’ll be doing a school project with a time-span of a whole year on photography. This will involve me probably taking a photography course, making an album, just studying a bit on photography. Soo, that kinda means I need a camera. I’ve been doing some research and looking at some digital SLRs online, but the thing is they aren’t too cheap.
Ones that I currently like are the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ35 (successor of FZ28 which is also not too bad!):

Canon G10 Powershot:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150:
(don’t think this shoots videos?)

I’m just a beginner in this topic, but I’m this interest of mine will develop, so I want a good camera that I can back it up with. Also good for just going out with friends and taking pictures, so preferably not too bulky. I would prefer a camera being able to shoot videos, 10 megapixels +, 5x optical zoom +, and also not too pricey (around 300-700NZD?). Preferred brands are Canon, Panasonic, Fujifilm Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks.

Look around “cameralabs.com” for ideas on what you want to buy. They list cameras by price range, and user experience. Once you get the model names of some cameras you like, go to “dpreview.com” where there are much more in-depth reviews on the ones you want.
Last year, when I was getting into photography, I bought a Canon Eos Rebel XS for around $600. I am very happy with it and the results it produces and I would suggest the same price range for you. You should, however, go to your local camera store to try out some models. You need a camera that fits in your hand comfortably. I chose a canon because their cameras generally have a thicker frame to hold on to which fits my hands better. You should also try some Nikon cameras such as the “D60″, which is a very close match to the Canon Rebel series. Keep in mind that small compact cameras are usually capable of producing some nice shots as well.
So find out what you like/what feels good, try it out, and watch your talent develop!
Good luck!

None of those are SLR’s. They have fixed lenses. An SLR (or DSLR) is a single lens reflex camera whoms len can be taken out and instantly swapped with another. They are considered far superior to the superzooms you are looking at.
I think the G10 or fz35 is a good choice but for the price of a G10 you could be getting a Nikon D60 or Canon Rebel XS which is bigger but is a DSLR.

None of the cameras you listed are DSLR cameras. The Canon G10 is a great advanced point and shoot though. You may want to consider the Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XS.

I suggest Nikon D3000 from the entry level dslr series, if you want to use it to its for common use i suggest you buy it with the 18-105 and 80-400 lenses.

I recommend you shop around on craigslist or ebay until you find a deal. Most cameras nowadays are fairly decent. I’d personally look to getting a cheap SLR instead of one of the DSLR-like things.
