How do you maintain your pets weight?
We recently took our 1 1/2 year old beagle to the vets to be told he’s about 10 pounds over weight so we cut out (most) treats and cut back on her food and have been walking her more. She’s currently eating kibbles and bits, is there a healthier food that you can recommend for her? I want her to be healthy and have a long live so I will do whatever I need to, to maintain her weight. Thanks!

I give cut up baby carrots and small apple slices and stay away from pet store treats. I also have plenty of toys to play fetch with and take walks as much as I can.

LOL… I can easily recommend healthier food than Kibbles and Bits.
it’s called “Everything else on the market”
Seriously though – I would recommend checking out the 4-6 star rated foods on this website:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com.
AND – excercise is the most important part – not just for weight control but for your dogs mental/emotional/behavioral well being too. Make sure your dog gets 30-60 min of excercise minimum every day! In addition to being more fit – he’ll be happier, more balanced, and act out less!
ADD: don’t bother with weight management foods – they just replace meat with more grains. your dog can lose weight w/o being cheated.
Also – IMO, the best brand I’ve seen at supermarkets is Newmans Own.

If your ‘Kibbles & Bits’ is Purina, I’d switch ASAP. That, in ALL its varieties, is a very poor quality dog food…too much corn and soy. Try IAMS weight and age management dry foods. Those are the better of the OTC store brands.

Pretty much any food is healthier than Kibbles and Bits.
Find a better food, feed him a bit LESS than the recommended amount for his age and size, and exercise him more. Don’t DRASTICALLY cut his rations or increase his exercise. Just slowly drop his weight until he’s in good body condition.

For one thing you could make a nutrition chart for your dog you could just
give your dog IAMS food insted of kibbles delight. Cut back on some food.

There are lots of “weight management” foods out there. make sure you find one you like with the ingredients that are acceptable to you. Feed her a certain amount every day at every time.
Don’t starve her… it will take time to shed the extra pounds. If it is safe for a human to loose 1-2 lbs a week, imagine what an animal her size would be safe to loose.
Also your vet should have had some tips on helping her out
