Is high speed rail really good for the environment?

One of the top benefits of high speed rail is the environment. However, if the rails are electrified, wouldn’t the electricity end up be being made by a fossil fuel plant. Also, if the efficiency of a electrified train is 30% and the Efficiency of a fossil fuel plant is about 40%, that means electrified trains have an efficiency rate of 12%. Now, you can compare that to the average car, which has a 30% efficiency rate and the car is far superior. Do you agree with my math or am I wrong?
Is Social Science really a science?

I was inspired by president Obama’s State of the Union speech to change my major in college to a Math / Science degree. Economics seemed perfect as it has some math, and is a social science. But is a Social Science really a science? Is an economist considered a scientist?

Everytime u turn on the news it is HORRIBLE news! My grandmother said the world was never this bad, but she lived through world war. They didn’t have 24 hour news like we do today. Is the world really worse, have times ever been worse? Is the news pushing bad news down our throat?

Is it really true Canadian universities education standards are 2 years behind ours?

Let’s say a first year engineering student were to transfer to Canada, would they become a third year student due to the education standards? I’ve heard America is 2 years ahead in educational standards than Canada.
